Ketamine is a well researched dissociative anesthetic agent that has been widely used since FDA approval in 1970. Ketamine has been extensively used in adult, pediatric, and veterinary populations for surgery, minor procedures, and trauma. It works by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain which interact with a neurotransmitter called glutamate. It is believed that this mode of action which is different than other antidepressants is responsible for the rapid action and therapeutic effects of this agent.
Several studies have shown an almost immediate decrease in depressive symptoms in about 75% of patients who received an initial IV infusion of Ketamine given over 40 minutes. These effects typically last for a couple days up to a week. A series of 6 infusions given over a 2 to 3 week period may lead to lasting benefits from one to several months in duration. Following these "loading" doses, patients can choose to either receive periodic "booster" IV doses or start maintenance therapy with oral or nasal dosing at home.
In our clinic, Ketamine infusions are given over 40 to 60 minutes in a relaxed, comfortable spa-like environment under the guidance of a Board Certified critical care provider to maximize safety during the treatment. Typical side effects may include feelings of "light headedness", "floating", or feeling "dissociated" as in a dream like state. Vital signs including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen level are monitored with hospital grade equipment throughout the treatment.
Unfortunately, insurance companies do not typically cover these treatments since they are considered "investigational" for the treatment of chronic pain, depression, anxiety & mood disorders. However, we do provide you with a "Super Bill" which can be submitted to your insurance for potential reimbursement.
Although there is potential for abuse with other forms of Ketamine, there are no reported cases of patients becoming addicted to Ketamine from receiving the low dosages that are used to treat mood disorders and pain disorders.
